Akron Holds Team Leads After Day One of MAC Track and Field Championships

MUNCIE, Ind. – The University of Akron men's and women's track and field team garnered strong results of the opening day of the Mid-American Conference Track and Field Championships hosted by Ball State at the Briner Sports Complex on Thursday (May 14) winning four individual titles.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Akron leads the men's field with 59 points, which is 34 points ahead of second place Massachusetts.
• The Zips also maintain the advantage in the women's team race with 60.50 points, 31.5 in front of second place Miami.
• Redshirt senior Owen Wendl (Medina, Ohio) captured his sixth career league title winning his third straight outdoor discus crown with a throw of 188-1 (57.33m).
• Redshirt seniors Gabrielle Griffiths (Fort Worth, Texas) and Brook Boes (Tiffin, Ohio) along with junior Victoria Kuol (Centerville, Ohio) swept the top three places in the women's hammer. Griffiths captured her first career league title with a throw of 195-6 (59.58m), while adding marks of 191-7 (58.40m) and 178-3 (54.34m), respectively, was Boes and Kuol.
• Sophomore Mercy Jebitok (Kapsabet, Kenya) won her initial league championship crossing the line in a school-record time of 33:11.90 in the women's 10,000 meters. Junior Megan Hipple (Warren, Ohio) placed third in a time of 33:40.61.
• Sophomores Garett Boe (Chesapeake, Va.), Isaac Baltic (Medina, Ohio) and Kaden Rambatt (Sharon, Wis.) shared the men's pole vault title eclipsing 15-11.75 (4.87m). It marked the second career crown for Baltic and the first championship for Boe and Rambatt.
• Griffiths also added a third-place finish in the women's javelin with a mark of 145-9 (44.42m).
• Redshirt senior Cassidy Allen (Lakewood, N.Y.) placed second in the women's pole vault with a mark of 13-8 (4.17m), while freshman Amanda Rauch (Marietta, Ohio) finished third with a career-best clearance of 13-0 (3.97m).
• Junior Titus Kirui (Eldoret, Kenya) garnered second team All-MAC honors finishing second in the men's 10,000 meters in a career-best time of 29:38.19.
• Sophomore Amari Noble (Virginia Beach, Va.) placed second in the men's hammer with a mark of 183-2 (55.83m).
• Junior Olin Frank (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) and sophomore Aiden Oderkirk (Strongsville, Ohio) posted first-day totals of 3,121 and 2,948, respectively, through five events of the men's decathlon.
• Earning qualifying times to advance to the finals on Saturday (May 16) on the men's side was junior Bram de Raedt (Houthalen-Helchteren, Belgium) 2nd-53.31Q) in the men's 400-meter hurdles and juniors Andrew Styles (Freeport, Bahamas) (1st-20.89Q) and AJ Jordan (Columbus, Ohio) (2nd-21.21Q) in the men's 200 meters.
• Qualifying for the women's finals in the 200 meters was sophomore Mariyah Moore (Cleveland, Ohio) (9th-24.14q*).
