Jamrog's Stellar Pitching, Cantrell's Home Run Lifts Akron to First Ever MAC Tournament Title

AKRON, Ohio -Â Katie Cantrell's two-run home run and a stellar pitching performance from Madie Jamrog lifted the Akron softball team to it's first ever Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship title on Saturday with a 3-1Â victory over Western Michigan at Firstone Stadium.
Along with Cantrell, Meagan Lee, Haley Glass, Sydney Selker and Delaney Jenkinson all recorded hits.
Madie Jamrog (18-6) started in the circle and picked up the win for Akron (34-23). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on four hits, allowing one walk and striking out two. After allowing the lead off hitter to reach base in the first inning, she retired the next 18 Broncos she faced.
The Zips saw four players named to the All-MAC Tournament team, as Cantrell, Glass, Lee and Jamrog all received recognition. Jamrog was also named the Tournament MVP.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips got on the scoreboard first, starting in the fourth inning. Akron plated two runs when Cantrell left the yard with Lily Sullivan aboard.
The Zips then held the Broncos scoreless before expanding their lead in the sixth inning. Akron scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Delaney Jenkinson, which brought the Zips lead to 3-0. Western Michigan put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Akron still held on for the 3-1 win.
GAME NOTES
» Akron's highest scoring inning was the fourth, when it pushed two runs across.
» The Zips out-hit the Broncos at a 5-4 clip.
» Akron pitchers faced 26 Western Michigan hitters in the game, allowing two ground balls and 17 fly balls while striking out two.
» The Zips drew four walks from Western Michigan pitching.
» Cantrell led the Zips at the plate, going 1 for 3 with a home run and two RBI.

Akron will wait to see where it will be playing next, with the NCAA Selection Show set for 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 10. Zip fans can attend the watch party at House 330 in the Cabaret. Doors are set to open at 6 p.m.
