Zips Win Season Opener in Five Sets Over ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, TN --The Akron volleyball team displayed notable resilience with a five set win in its season opening match over the East Tennessee State Buccaneers on the road at Brooks Gymnasium on Friday (Aug. 28).
The Zips offense was paced by Delaney Gash, who finished with 15 kills on a .306 hitting percentage and added six assists. Gash also contributed defensively with seven digs and three blocks, while Clara Christensen and Masa Prascevic tossed up 24 and 15 assists, respectively.

Supporting the offensive attack with double-digit kills were Chidera  Ozoh (11) and Lauren Wilson (10). Ozoh also collected three blocks, while Lyndi Wolf joined the block party with three stops. Wolf also distributed three aces, joined by Vanessa del Real and Reilly Chausse with three each.

Del Real led the Zips defensively on the ground with 26 digs and Masa followed with seven.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Zips took the first set 25-20 propelled by a strong showing on the attacking end. Akron put together a .333 attack percentage with 11 kills in the set victory. The Zips opened up a 13-7 lead in the stanza and coasted to victory from there. Akron also supplemented their offense with five aces in the opening set.
SET 2 | After their win in the first set, Akron put themselves on the cusp of a sweep with a 25-17 victory in set number two. The Zips took control of the set lead early on at 5-4 and never looked back. Akron opened its biggest lead of the stanza, eight points, to finish off the set, collecting 17 kills . The Akron offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza.
SET 3 | East Tennessee State avoided an early loss with a third-set victory to make it a 2-1 match. The Zips rallied from a nine-point deficit at 20-11, but East Tennessee State hung on to win the set 25-22.
SET 4 | Akron then dropped their second straight set 25-11 to brind the match level at two sets apiece. The Zips trailed by as many as 14 points as East Tennessee State grabbed the advantage for good at 3-2 and Akron wasn't able to recover in a set that was tied up just once before the Buccaneers took over.
SET 5 | Akron needed five sets to secure victory. After they grabbed a two sets to none lead, East Tennessee State responded to take the third and fourth sets before the Zips finished off their victory with a 15-11 fifth-set win. The Zips scored first and never trailed in set five to earn the victory. Akron opened up as much as a five point lead at 10-5 before finishing off the set.
