Akron Rifle Set to Open 2026-27 Campaign at Nebraska

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron rifle team is set to open the 2026-27 season on Sept. 26 at Nebraska, as the Zips enter the year with a strong combination of returning veterans and talented newcomers.
Returning veteran Logan McClimans, last season's Most Improved Air Rifle Shooter, enters the year with momentum after regularly reaching the 580s in smallbore and 590s in air rifle during preseason training. Known for his consistency and reliability, McClimans is expected to be a regular contributor to the Zips' counting scores.
Matthew Kimball returns following a breakout freshman campaign that earned him Akron Rookie of the Year honors. After a productive summer of training, Kimball has shown signs of taking another step forward in both smallbore and air rifle.
The Zips also welcome a talented group of newcomers. Maddie Allen (Somerset, Pa.) arrives in Akron after breaking the NRA 3P national record over the summer and has impressed early with her composure under pressure.
Freshman Cohen Ahner (Los Lunas, N.M.) has shown early strength in air rifle and is expected to make his collegiate debut at Nebraska, while Megan Fondy (Georgetown, Ind.), the reigning National Junior ROTC 3P Air Rifle Champion, brings championship experience and a strong work ethic to the Akron lineup.
The Sept. 26 opener marks Akron's return to Nebraska after a four-year hiatus and the program's earliest season-opening match in decades. The Zips' previous trip to Nebraska was a historic one, producing Akron's first team score above 4,700.
Akron's early-season slate will also feature a home matchup against Ohio State. As the only two NCAA rifle programs in Ohio, the Zips and Buckeyes will battle for state bragging rights and the title of Ohio champion.
With a blend of veteran leadership and promising newcomers, the Zips are ready to take aim at another strong season!
