Swimming and Diving Flies Past Duquesne

AKRON, Ohio – The Univestiy of Akron swimming and diving team trounced visiting Duquesne Saturday afternoon at Ocasek Natatorium.
Akron recorded the top time in all but two of the 13 events to easily take the win by a final score of 124-89. Becca Zimmer and Meg Finnerty highlighted the individual accolades with a pair of event wins each.
Zimmer picked up her first win in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:36.22, with Meghan Bowling finishing just behind for second. Danielle Dostall would take third in the event to give the Zips the sweep.
Zimmer and Bowling would also take the top two spots the 500-yard freestyle, in times of 5:12.22 and 5:13.45 respectively. Becca Emerich gave the Zips another sweep by taking third.
Finnerty took the top time in the 200-yard freestyle, touching in a time of 1:54.51. Emerich took third.
Jessica Ickes led the Zips to a sweep of the top three spots in the 50-yard free. Ickes clocked in at 24.72. Freshman Taylor Hart was a close second with a time of 24.76 and Kendra Colby was third.
Catherine Carr took first in the 200-yard IM. Carr finished nearly two seconds ahead of Duquesne's Miriam McGeath, who owns the Ocasek Natatorium record for the 400-yard IM. Kelsea Cross finished third.
Carr finished second in the 200-yard butterfly behind DU's Line Lovberg. Emily Poland was third in the event.
Finnerty won her second individual event in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.71. Ickes placed third in 54.47
Kelsea Cross was the top finisher in the 200-yard backstroke. Cross finished a full four seconds ahead of second place Kelsey Ferrante.
Rachel Szymkowiak was the runner-up of the 200-yard breaststroke. Amanda Lawson finished third in the event.
The Akron relay of Cross, Colby, Carr, and Ickes won the 200-yard medley relay, finishing over a second ahead of Duquesne's top squad. Akron's 'B' relay took third.
The Zips also won the 400-yard free relay, with the team of Ferrante, Emerich, Colby, and Finnerty finishing in 3:38.50.
Carla McNamara was the winner of the 1-meter diving, with Leeanna Hoover taking the 3-meter honors.
The Zips will compete at Ocasek Natatorium again next Saturday against Mid-American Conference rival Miami. The meet begins at 1:00 p.m.
