Akron Cruises Past Bowling Green in Friday Swimming Action

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron swimming and diving team beat visiting Bowling Green in resounding fashion, 185-109, Friday afternoon at Ocasek Natatorium.
Akron (2-3) got a pair of individual victories from both Becca Zimmer and Kelsea Cross in the meet. The Zips also swept the 400-yard individual medley, with Cross taking second, and took first in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Zimmer swam a season-best time of 10:32.82 to win the 1000-yard freestyle. Meghan Bowling took third in the event, just missing her season-best time in the event. The duo would take first and second in the 500-yard freestyle. Zimmer's winning time of 5:09.74 was another season-best swim.
Cross took top honors in the 100-yard backstroke. Kelsey Ferrante swam just under her season-best, touching in 59.70, to take third in the heat. Cross and Ferrante would also take first and third in the 200-yard backstroke with a pair of season-best times. Cross finished in 2:06.92, while Ferrante touched in 2:09.45.
Meg Finnerty won the 200-yard freestyle, touching home just ahead of Bowling Green's Erica Nieminen. Becca Emerich was third just over a second back of Finnerty.
Kendra Colby captured an event win for the second consecutive meet when she won the 100-yard breaststroke, beating BGSU's Alexis Kain with a season-best time of 1:06.02. Freshman Amanda Lawson was third in the event, also swimming a season-best. Colby finished third in the 200-yard breaststroke.
The Zips swept the top three spots in the 400-yard individual medley, led by Catherine Carr's winning time of 4:34.18. Cross was second and Rachel Szykowiak took third.
Freshman Taylor Hart was the winner of the 50-yard freestyle in 24.26, a season-best swim for the rookie.
The diving events featured only Akron divers with Carla McNamara winning the 1-meter and Leeanna Hoover taking the 3-meter. Hoover won the 3-meter with an outstanding total of 301.95.
The Akron 200-yard freestyle relay of Finnerty, Ickes, Colby, and Hart finished first in a time of 1:37.93.
Carr was second in both the 200-yard and 100-yard butterfly, with teammate Emily Poland finishing third in both events. Jessica Ickes and Finnerty finished second and third in the 100-yard freestyle. Ickes's time of 53.12 was her best of the season.
Akron hosts the annual Zippy Invitational on Dec. 2-4. The meet features 14 women's teams and 9 men's teams. Prelim sessions each day begin at 9:00 a.m. Friday and Saturday's finals sessions start at 6:00 p.m. with the finals of Sunday's events beginning at 4:00 p.m.
