Zips Drop Close Contest to Ball State

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron swimming and diving team dropped a heartbreaker to Ball State Saturday, 155-145, at Ocasek Natatorium.
The Zips (1-2) led throughout the meet before the Cardinals (4-0) took the lead in the second-to-last event and held on for the win.
Becca Zimmer, Meg Finnerty, and Kelsea Cross each won two events for the Zips.
Zimmer and Meghan Bowling claimed the top two spots in the 1000-yard freestyle. Zimmer closed nicely to finish in 10:37.78. Bowling finished just under two seconds back in 10:39.42. Zimmer and Bowling also finished first and second in the 500-yard freestyle, with Becca Emerich coming in third to produce an Akron sweep of the top three spots. All three Zips tallied season best swims in the 500, swimming 5:10.17, 5:11.29, and 5:11.59 respectively.
Finnerty and Becca Emerich also finished first and second for the Zips, taking the top spots in the 200-yard freestyle. Finnerty swam a 1:54.94, with Emerich beating BSU's Emily Wolisek by .04 for second. Finnerty recorded her second victory of the afternoon in the 100-yard freestyle, lowering her season best by .01 (53.03). Jessica Ickes was second in the event, also lowering her season best with a swim of 53.70.
Cross picked up the win in both backstroke events. Cross was just off her season-best time, finishing in 58.04 in the 100 back. She then took the 200-yard back with a time of 2:07.12.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, Rachel Szymkowiak took second with a season-best time of 1:07.23. Symkowiak also took second and lowered her season best in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing in 2:24.56.
Catherine Carr lowered her season best as she won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:06.05. Emily Poland also lowered her season best, taking third in 2:10.85. Carr took second in the 100-yard fly with a time of 58.15, also a season best.
Taylor Hart placed second in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.67. That time was her best of the young season.
In the 1-meter diving, sophomore Carla McNamara took the win with a six-dive total of 267.15. McNamara took second in the 3-meter event.
The Zips will swim their first road dual meet of the season next Saturday when they travel to St. Francis (Pa.). The meet begins at 1:00 p.m.
