Zips Take Down Marshall in Swimming Action

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The University of Akron swimming and diving team picked up a dual meet win on Saturday, downing Marshall 176-123.
Akron (3-4) won nine of the 16 contested events and was led by Kelsea Cross and Jessica Ickes – each the winner of two events on the day.
Cross won the 100-yard and 200-yard backstrokes for the second meet in a row. She led a top three sweep of the 100 back – with Kelsey Ferrante and Molly Raspopovich taking second and third – in a time of 58.47. Cross later won the 200 back in 2:08.04. Ferrante was second in that event as well.
Ickes earned the win in both the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle. Ickes finished the 50 free in 24.58, just ahead of teammate Taylor Hart (24.72). The duo also took the top two spots in the 100 free, with Ickes taking the win in 53.63.
Leeanna Hoover was the winner of the 1-meter diving, and took second in the 3-meter behind teammate Carla McNamara. McNamara was third in the 1-meter.
Becca Zimmer won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:08.91 and was the runner-up in the 200-yard free. Becca Emerich took second in the 500 and third in the 200. Amanda Lawson was second in the 100-yard breaststroke, with Kendra Colby taking third. Colby would take second in the 200 breast, finishing just ahead of Lawson in third. Catherine Carr finished second in both the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly.
UA also won both of the relays in the meet. The team of Ickes, Colby, Emerich, and Hart won the 200-yard freestyle relay. Cross, Colby, Carr, and Hart teamed up to win the 200-yard medley relay.
Akron returns to action next Saturday, when they travel to Mid-American Conference foe Eastern Michigan. The meet begins at 1 p.m.
