Swimming and Diving Falls to Ball State, 162-137, in MAC Opener

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron swimming and diving team fell to Ball State, 162-137, in its home and Mid-American Conference opener Saturday afternoon at Ocasek Natatorium. Sophomore Kelsey Ferrante and junior Carla McNamara each won two events for the Zips as Ferrante won the 100 and 200-yard backstroke, while McNamara took the 1 and 3-meter diving competitions.
Ferrante notched first place finishes in the 100 back and 200 back in season best times of 57.81 and 2:06.04, respectively. Senior Kelsea Cross added top-3 finishes in both backstroke events in support of Ferrante as she was second in the 200 back (2:08.07) and third in the 100 back (58.19).
McNamara placed first in the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 277.95, while her 3-meter winning score was 262.56. Junior Amy Dorow also fared well for the Zips as she was runner-up in both dives with a score of 251.18 on the 1-meter board and 230.03 for the 3-meter.
Senior Becca Zimmer took first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:09.30) and was second in the 200 free (1:55.25). Junior Catherine Carr easily took the top spot in the 400-yard IM, winning by over six seconds in 4:31.67. Carr also touched the wall second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:05.16).
Freshman Ashley Drazkowski was second in the 1000 free (10:41.17) and third in the 500 free (5:12.97), while classmate Erin Seiler placed second in the 100 fly (57.40) and third in the 400 IM (4:40.57).
Also earning runner-up spots for UA were junior Kendra Colby in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.02) and sophomore Taylor Hart in the 50 free (24.35). In addition, freshman Hannah Raspopovich was third in the 50 free (24.53) and sophomore Amanda Lawson took third in the 200 breast (2:24.46).
In the relays, Akron took second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:46.72) and 400-yard free relay (3:35.40). The Zips top relay in the 200-yard medley was comprised of Cross, Colby, Seiler and Hart, while the 400-yard free relay consisted of Ferrante, Colby, freshman Ashley Niznik and Carr.
The Zips return to action next Saturday, Nov. 3 as they travel to Buffalo for MAC dual meet at 2 p.m.
