Carr Once Again Lowers 400 IM Record

AKRON, Ohio – Sophomore Catherine Carr once again lowered her University of Akron record in the 400-yard individual medley Friday night, as day two of the 2012 Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships heated up at Ocasek Natatorium.
Akron stands seventh in the standings after the second day of competition with 202 points, just 17 points behind sixth-place Buffalo. Toledo leads a close meet at the top with 395 points. Ohio is second at 384, and Miami is third with 363.
Carr lowered the school record she set earlier in the day by almost three seconds, swimming a 4:17.76 to take runner-up honors. The time also gave her the NCAA B standard. Carr becomes UA's highest individual finisher at the conference meet since Kendall Karchner won the 200-yard backstroke at the 2009 MAC Championships. Toledo's Rachel Johnson won the event in 4:14.94, lowering her Ocasek record from the morning session.
Kelsea Cross finished sixth in the 100-yard backstroke, lowering her career-best in the process. Cross finished in 55.49 to top her time from the morning by .03. Miami's Leah Thronton won the event with a pool record time of 54.42.
Becca Zimmer grabbed a seventh-place finish with her swim in the 200-yard freestyle. Zimmer swam a finals time of 1:50.93. Meg Finnerty took ninth in the event by winning the consolation final in a time of 1:50.62. Brittany Kuras of Buffalo won the event in a pool record time of 1:46.30.
Jessica Ickes placed 16th in the 100-yard butterfly and moved into a tie for third all-time in UA history with her time of 56.03. Maegan O'Conner won the event in a time of 53.85 for Miami.
Amanda Lawson and Rachel Szymkowiak took 15th and 16th in in the 100-yard breaststroke. Lawson finished in 1:04.43, with Szymkowiak just back in 1:04.97. Laura Lindsay backed up her top qualifying time in the event by winning the final as well.
The Zips took sixth in the 200-yard medley relay. The squad of Cross, Szymkowiak, Ickes, and Finnerty became the second fastest team in Akron history in the event with their swim of 1:43.18.
UA finished seventh in the 800-yard freestyle relay, swimming the fourth fastest time in school history. Carr, Finnerty, Becca Emerich, and Zimmer turned in a time of 7:27.27.
The final day of competition at the 2012 MAC Swimming and Diving Championships begins tomorrow with prelims at 11 a.m. Finals for the day begin at 7 p.m. Follow all the action this weekend with live stats and live video streaming at MAC-Sports.com.
