Baseball Beaten at Ohio State in Midweek Action
April 11 | Baseball
COLUMBUS, Ohio – A four-run sixth inning launched Ohio State past The University of Akron baseball team, 7-2, on Wednesday at Bill Davis Stadium.
Junior Jared Turocy drove in both Akron (13-19) runs. Junior Samuel Trecaso, sophomore Darius Washington, and redshirt freshman Joey Havrilak each grabbed a pair of hits. Sophomore Tyler Smith (0-1) took the loss, giving up three runs in five innings. Senior Danny Fawcett tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Mike Carroll tallied a pair of RBI for Ohio State (20-12). Greg Greve (3-2) allowed two runs in six innings to take the win.
OSU took advantage of two first-inning walks to take the early lead. Smith issued a pair of two-out free passes to load the bases and Carroll then sent a two-run single through the right side.
A Patrick Porter sacrifice fly edged Ohio State's lead to 3-0 in the third. Ryan Cypret led off the inning with a single to right center and moved to third on Brad Hallberg's single down the left field line. Cypret was then erased trying to score on a wild pitch, but Hallberg would score on Porter's sacrifice fly to center.
Akron loaded the bags with nobody out to in the top of the fifth, but a runner's interference call helped quell what could have been a big UA rally. With the bases full, Samuel Trecaso hit a chopper to second base and Washington was called for runner's interference trying to break up the double play. The call forced Brady Stewart and Havrilak back to third and second and also canceled out Trecaso. Turocy helped salvage the inning, however, with a double to left center to make the score 3-2.
OSU then struck for four off of reliever Jason McPeek in the sixth to extend its lead to 7-2. McPeek allowed a leadoff single to Porter and after a sacrifice bunt, Porter was doubled in by Joe Ciamacco. After giving up two more hits, McPeek walked three straight to give the Buckeyes its five-run advantage.
Akron hits the road this weekend to continue Mid-American Conference play, traveling to Buffalo for a three game series. The set gets started on Friday at 3 p.m.
