MIAMI – Jack Griffin's 29-yard field goal lifted Florida International to a 41-38 victory over Akron on Saturday night at Alfonso Field at FIU Stadium.
It was Griffin's 30-yard field goal kick as time expired in regulation that knotted the contest, which ran four hours and 20 minutes, at 38 points apiece.
Akron (0-2) took a 38-35 lead with 1:53 to play when Dalton Williams connected with Marquelo Suel on a 15-yard pass.
Darian Mallary's 32-yard rushing TD gave FIU (1-1) a 35-31 lead with 6:54 to play.
Williams finished the night 27-of-54 passing for 313 yards, to go with a school-record-tying five touchdowns and one interception. Suel had seven receptions for 99 yards and two TDs.
Kurt Mangum led the UA defense with 11 tackles, eight of which were solo stops, while J.D. Griggs had eight tackles to go with a pair of sacks.
The Zips ran 88 plays for 411 yards of total offense, compared to the Panther's 80 plays for 441 yards. FIU rushed the ball 232 yards.
Akron plays host to Morgan State on Sept. 15 at 3:30 p.m. ET. The contest will be carried by ESPN3.
