Baseball Wraps Up Season with 4-1 Loss to Kent State

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron (15-37, 10-16 MAC) baseball team wrapped up the 2013 season with a loss to Kent State University (34-21, 20-7 MAC) in the series finale of the three game Mid-American Conference series by a score of 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Michael Steensen made the start at pitcher for the Zips, and turned in 3.0 innings pitched with three earned runs allowed and two strikeouts. Steensen's record fell to 1-3 in the loss.
Kent State put the first run on the board in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead after an RBI single up the middle. The Golden Flashes would add two more runs in the top of the third to take a three run lead over the Zips. KSU finished off their scoring effort with another run in the sixth inning on a solo homer, giving them a 4-0 lead.
The Zips plated their lone run of the game in the sixth inning. Devan Ahart attempted to steal second with Matt Rembielak on third base. The throw down to second allowed Rembielak to score from third, his 22nd run of the season.
Overall, the Akron offense banged out six base hits, led by the shortstop Rembielak who was 2-for-3 with one run scored. Jared Turocy, Bryan White, Derek Carmichael and Ahart also recorded base hits in the series finale.
Samuel Trecaso worked a scoreless ninth inning to lower his team leading ERA to 0.74. He finished the season with 36.1 innings on the mound and 22 strikeouts.
Akron baseball honored seniors Samuel Trecaso and Jared Turocy on Saturday afternoon for their work on the diamond and in the classroom. Turocy finished the season with a team-high .356 batting average with 25 RBI and two homeruns.
