HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – The University of Akron (12-12) baseball team dropped the first matchup of the week by a score of 5-2 to Marshall (9-16) on Tuesday afternoon at Kennedy Center Field.
Junior lefty Pat Dyer started on the mound for Akron, and saw his record fall to 1-2 in the loss. Dyer posted 3.1 innings on the mound with five runs – two earned – and three strikeouts.
The Zips drew first blood, as redshirt junior Joey Havrilak scored on a wild pitch by Marshall's starter Brandyn Sittinger to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Havrilak was named Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week on Monday for his performance in the Toledo series win last weekend.
Marshall knotted the game at 1-1 on an Eric Escobedo sacrifice fly to centerfield in the bottom half of the first. With the game tied in the second inning, the Thundering Herd added three more runs off of Dyer, all unearned, to bring the game to a 4-1 Marshall advantage.
Dyer would allow his final run of the afternoon in the third on a RBI single by Marshall's Robert Fajardo, before being relieved by redshirt senior Joe Cochran with one out in the fourth. Cochran worked an efficient 3.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts, three hits allowed and no walks, which held the game at the 5-1 Marshall lead.
Sophomore Kris Simonton drove in junior Matt Rembielak on a groundout in the fifth to bring the game to its final score of 5-2. Rembielak now has four runs scored in 11 games this season.
Redshirt junior Andrew Fanning tossed a scoreless inning of relief in the eighth inning with no hits or walks allowed.
Overall on offense, Akron totaled four base hits and four walks, led by redshirt senior James Sheltrown with two hits including one double. Havrilak provided one run, one hit and one walk in the Tuesday matchup.
UA will look ahead to a home contest at Canal Park on Wednesday against Canisius, set to begin at 3 p.m. Admission to all Akron home games is free of charge, with live stats and a video stream available through GoZips.com.
Due to a burst pipe at Canal Park, concessions will not be available during the game. However, fans are welcome to bring in their own food and drink into the ballpark for tomorrow's game only.
