COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Akron baseball team fell at Ohio State, 9-4, on Wednesday evening at Bill Davis Stadium.
The Zips fell to 10-12 overall, while the Buckeyes improved to 16-6 overall.
"We had our share of hits, but left six runners in scoring position," head coach Rick Rembielak said. "That was the discrepancy between the score. Ohio State hit those guys in."
Akron jumped on the scoreboard first with two runs in the top of the second inning. Redshirt freshman Mason Mamarella singled up the middle, scoring redshirt junior Gerrad Rohan, who reached on a single to center. Junior Daulton Mosbarger doubled to right field, bringing in sophomore Brian Lees, who singled up the middle.
OSU tied the game in the bottom of the second.
The Buckeyes broke the game open with six runs in the bottom of the fifth, going ahead 8-2.
In the top of the sixth, Akron added a run as junior Billy Salem grounded out to first with bases load, scoring sophomore Dom Iero.
In the top of the seventh, Akron added its fourth run as Rohan sacrificed to right field, bringing home redshirt senior Joey Havrilak, who doubled down the right field line.
The Buckeyes' Sabanosh homered in the bottom of the inning for the final 9-4 score.
Mosbarger, Havrilak, and junior Kris Simonton led the Zips at the plate, each going 2-for-5. Mosbarger and Havrilak each had a double.
On the mound, freshman southpaw Josh Lapiana (0-2) hurled 4.2 innings, striking out three and walking three.
"Lapiana pitched much better his second time out," Rembielak said. "He hit the wall in the fifth with a hit, walk, then didn't execute a bunt play. His ball started to get elevated, and it caught up to him. I am glad to see he improved though."
Overall, Akron out-hit Ohio State, 12-11.
Akron returns home to host Toledo in its first Mid-American Conference home series. Action begins on Friday, March 27, at 3 p.m. at Lee R. Jackson Field.
