ATHENS, Ohio – The University of Akron baseball team dropped game two of a three-game Mid-American Conference series to Ohio by a final score of 6-1 on Saturday at Bob Wren Stadium.
The loss moves Akron to 19-21 overall and 9-8 in the MAC while the Bobcats improved to 25-15 and 10-7 in conference play.
Akron's lone run of the day came in the top of the first inning when redshirt freshman outfielder Mason Mamarella led off the game with a walk. A single off the bat of Joey Havrilak advanced Mamarella to third, setting him up to score on a fielder's choice RBI from sophomore catcher Brian Lees. The run gave Akron a short-lived 1-0 lead.
Havrilak, a redshirt senior outfielder, posted his team-leading 15th multi-hit game of the season and is now on a seven-game hit streak. He registered two of Akron's four hits on the day, with the others belonging to sophomore infielder Dom Iero and freshman infielder Alex Dirienzo.
Junior right-hander JT Brubaker made the start on the mound for Akron and turned in 5.0 innings with five runs allowed, three earned. He served up seven hits, two walks and a strikeout. His record is even at 4-4 with the loss.
Following Akron's run in the first inning, the Bobcats quickly jumped ahead to 2-1 in their half of the first, plating runs on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single.
Ohio tacked on another run in the second inning and took advantage of a pair of Akron miscues in the third to lead 4-1.
Both teams were quiet in the fourth, but the Bobcats added one run in both the fifth and sixth innings on another run-scoring single and sacrifice fly for the 6-1 result.
Sophomore reliever Josh Davis replaced Brubaker in the sixth and tossed a scoreless seventh and eighth, but the Zips offense could not string together a rally in the late innings. Davis provided 3.0 innings of relief and allowed six hits and one run.
Overall, Ohio out-hit Akron, 13-4. Akron had three errors in the contest while the Bobcats posted one.
The win went to Ohio starter Connor Sitz (5-1) who allowed three hits and one run over 5.0 innings.
The series finale between the Zips and the Bobcats is set for Sunday, April 26 at Bob Wren Stadium. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
