AKRON – The Akron women's golf team travels to Williamsburg, Va. to defend their 2018 team championship at the 2019 Kingsmill Resort Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday, March 18-19 at Kingsmill Resort.
"It will be fun to attempt to defend our title, but our main focus is continuing our improvement and progress," head coach Jenny King said. " We've had some character-building moments this semester and it is making us mentally tougher. We look forward to the opportunity and challenge to play this golf course again which is seen on LPGA tour every year."
The 54-hole event will be played at the par-72 River Course at Kingsmill Resort that stretches 6,025 yards, the same venue Akron secured the win last season. On Monday, the tournament begins with an 8:30 shotgun start with continuous play through 36 holes. Tuesday's final round is scheduled for a 9 a.m. shotgun start. The 15-team field includes host William & Mary, Akron, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, High Point, Indiana State, Longwood, Loyola-Chicago, Monmouth, Mount St. Mary's, Penn, Seton Hall, St. Francis (Pa.), Wagner and Yale.
Akron's starting five features senior Danielle Nicholson (Geneva, Ohio), who earned runner-up last year, followed by senior Makayla Dull (Fremont, Ohio), junior Allyson Wentworth (Stewartsville, N.J.), sophomore Abbie Pearce (Green, Ohio) and freshman Ivana Shah (Mumbai, India).
Last year, Akron climbed one spot on the leaderboard during the final round to claim the 2018 Kingsmill Intercollegiate team title with a 298-302-311 – 911 (+47), while Nicholson earned runner-up. In addition, sophomore Jacinta Pikunas (Youngstown, Ohio) finished fifth overall and recorded a hole-in-one on the 157-yard, par-3 hole No. 5 on.
Akron placed four golfers in the Top 20 while all five Zips ranked inside the Top 40 – Nicholson T2, 75-74-73 – 222 (+6), Pikunas T5, 70-76-81 - 227 (+11), Pearce T19, 84-76-74 - 234 (+18) and Wentworth 38th, 78-77-88 - 243 (+27) – Former senior Pader Her (Holt, Mich.) also finished tied at 19th overall, 79-72-83 - 234 (+18).
