Zips Fall in Game One of Wagon Wheel Series

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips baseball team fell 12-2 in the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenges series opener to visiting rival Kent State at Skeeles Field on Friday.

The Zips (11-30, 9-20 MAC) scattered eight hits in the loss, including a towering homerun by seniors Jerry Reinhart (Batavia, N.Y.) in the bottom of the sixth inning. Seven different Zips recorded hits throughout the eight-inning affair as senior Justin Barr (Pensacola, Fla.) led the way with a 2-for-4 effort. Reinhart registered both RBI as graduate Nick Arrivo (Ann Arbor, Mich.) opened the inning with a base hit through the right side. Akron left 10 men on base, including the bases loaded twice.

The Golden Flashes (16-20, 11-12 MAC) tallied 14 hits and started the scoring in the third inning, scoring five runs on six hits and a pair of Akron miscues KSU added a run in the sixth and two in the seventh, before Reinhart blasted a two-run shot over the left field fence to make it an 8-2 ballgame. Kent State continued to build on the lead, adding a run in the seventh and three in the eighth as the Flashes launched four homeruns in the contest. . Justin Miknis led the Flashes offense with a 3-for-4 performance which included a two-run blast.

KSU Starting pitcher Eric Chalus earned the win with six complete innings, allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Akron senior Taed Heydinger (Bayfield, Colo.) also hurled six complete innings and received the loss.

The rivalry series continues on Saturday, April 30 with a doubleheader starting at Noon at Skeeles Field. Fans can follow the action via live stats on GoZips.com.
