Zips Come Up Short In a 55-14 Loss to Northern Illinois

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron football team fell 55-14 to Northern Illinois at home on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 7).
Redshirt senior RB Lorenzo Lingard (Orange City, Fla.) paced the Zips rushing attack by accumulating 49 yards, averaging 4.1 yards per carry. Lingard also tacked on 32 receiving yards. Redshirt sophomore QB Tahj Bullock (East Orange, N.J.) also added 41 yards and one touchdown on the ground.
Redshirt senior TE TJ Banks (North Versailles, Pa.) hauled in four catches for 38 yards and one score.
Sophomore LB Bryan McCoy (Chicago, Ill.) led the Akron defensive effort, collecting three tackles, 1.0 TFL, and one sack. Redshirt sophomore CB Devonte Golden-Nelson (Memphis, Tenn.) had three tackles in the loss.
Defensively, Akron held up fairly well against the Northern Illinois passing attack, holding the Huskies to 191 yards through the air.
How It HappenedAkron responded to a 7-0 lead from Northern Illinois with a score from Bullock to tie the game at 7-7 with 7:11 remaining in the first quarter.
In his first career start, Bullock led the Zips down the field on the first drive for a touchdown on a 11-play, 65-yard drive that lasted 5:31. Bullock picked up 30 yards on the ground and threw for five yards, while Lingard ran the ball five times for 15 yards.Â
Northern Illinois then scored to take a 48-7 lead before the Zips put a touchdown on the board from Banks to cut into the lead and make it a 48-14 game.
» Northern Illinois outgained Akron 571-253 in the contest.
» Rocky Lombardi led the Huskies passing attack, completing 10 of his 15 attempts for 191 yards and two touchdowns.
» Antario Brown led the Northern Illinois rushing attack with 280 yards and four touchdowns.
