AKRON, Ohio - The 12th-ranked University of Akron rifle team garnered a pair of victories in its season-opener on Saturday (Oct. 5) besting Mount Aloysius and Schreiner.

The Zips registered 4709 points in the match to best Mount Aloysius (4558) and Schreiner (3194), who were both competing in their first-ever Division I contest.

In smallbore, senior Erin Schnupp (Gorham, Maine) lead the squad with a career-tying 588 mark. Junior Natalia Siek (Flemington, N.J.), also tied her career-high score of 586, while junior Rachael Paddock (Perry, N.Y.) set a new career-high mark of 585.

In the air rifle, senior Gavin Perkowski (Bolivar, Ohio) took the top-gun honors posting a 595 total. He opened the match with a perfect 10-shot series of 100 and closed out the match with another 100. Senior Alexis Kirk (Clarence Center, N.Y.) added a 594 score, including her two perfect 100's in the middle of the match. Senior Rachel Engels (Meridian, Idaho) opened the match with three 10-shot series of all perfect 100's en route to finishing the match with a 592 total.

Akron returns to competition traveling to Murray, Ky., to battle UT Martin and No. 6 Ole Miss on Friday (Oct. 11) and Saturday (Oct. 12), respectively.
