SCOUTING REPORT
Purdue comes into the series rocking an 8-0 record after sweeping four-game series against Stephen F. Austin and Niagara. Against the Purple Eagles, Purdue surrendered nine runs while scoring 64. The Boilermakers scored 10 or more runs in two games with 16 coming in game two of the series. Purdue also scored 30 runs in the last two games against Stephen F. Austin.
So far this season, Purdue has scored 80 runs while allowing 26.
The Boilermakers are led by Logan Sutter in batting average (.538), hits (14), doubles (5), home runs (3), RBI (13) and walks (8). Eli Anderson holds the lead for stolen bases (3) and three players have a triple each.
On the mound, Easton Storey leads the way in ERA (0.00), strikeouts (15) while sharing the lead for wins (2). Cole Van Assen has thrown the most innings this season (9.2) while Avery Cook holds the team-high in saves (3).
Sutter was named the BIG 10 Player of the Week on February 17. He compiled a .571/.667/1.000 slash to lead Purdue to a sweep of Stephen F. Austin which included an 8-for-14 performance at the plate, collecting six runs, eight RBI and 14 total bases.
Purdue saw Brandon Anderson, CJ Richmond and Keenan Spence named to the BIG 10 Preseason Watchlist.
ZIPS AT A GLANCE
The Zips are coming off an 11-2 victory over Youngstown State on February 26. The Zips scored their 11 runs on six hits which included a two-hit performance from Evan Bottone. Max Bowman helped bring home four RBI in the home opener. On the mound, the Zips collected 15 strikeouts, with Elijah Griffith and Jet Slepak both ringing up five Penguins.
The Zips are led by Blake Bowen in batting average (.417), hits (9) and walks (9). Max Bowman leads the way in RBI (10) while Jack Poist is the leader in stolen bases (4). On the mound, three different Zips have collected wins while Johnny Anservitz holds the lone save of the season. Anservitz has an ERA of 0.00 through three appearances and 3.0 innings of work with three strikeouts. Dawson Tourney leads the pitching staff in strikeouts with 11.
In the last weekend series at Jacksonville State, Tourney put together a career outing out of the pen. Throwing four innings of relief, Dawson struck out a career-high eight batters while allowing just one unearned run on two hits.
Poist was also named the MAC Player of the Week after the first week of the season. On the week, Jack slashed .417/.750/.611 with five hits in 12 at-bats, drawing five walks, driving in six runs and coming around to score six times as well. He also went a perfect 2-for-2 on stolen bases.
Along with Poist, two other Zips (Bottone and Bowen) have reached base safely in all seven games this season.
LAST TIME OUT (VS YOUNGSTOWN STATE 2/26)
AKRON, Ohio - The Akron Zips opened its home slate with an 11-2 win over Youngstown State as senior Max Bowman racked up four RBIs at Skeeles Field on Wednesday.
Bowman went 1-for-2 with a triple and two walks in addition to his four RBIs for the Zips. Freshman Blake Bowen compiled a standout performance as well, going 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI. Sophomore Evan Bottone also contributed for Akron, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.
Sophomore Elijah Griffith (1-0) started on the mound and picked up the win for Akron (3-4). The right-hander went four innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits, allowing two walks and striking out five. Sophomore John Allen also made an impact on the mound for the Zips, throwing two scoreless innings while allowing one hit, with no walks and four strikeouts.
The Zips were trailing 1-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board. Akron managed to push across two runs in the inning.
The Zips then held the Penguins scoreless before expanding their lead in the third inning. which brought the Zips lead to 5-1.
Youngstown State narrowed Akron's lead to 5-2 before the Zips stretched the advantage to 6-2 in the fourth inning.
Akron kept the Penguins without a run before their offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. The Zips scored five runs in the inning, highlighted by a three-run triple off the bat of Bowman, bringing the score to 11-2 in favor of Akron. The score remained 11-2 for the rest of the game, as the Zips coasted to the win.
CAREER DAY OUT OF THE PEN
Coming in to pitch four innings of relief against Jacksonville State on February 21, Dawson Tourney put together a career effort against the Gamecocks.Dawson struck out a career-high eight batters in Friday's contest while only allowing two hits, one unearned run and posted an ERA of 0.00.
STREAKS AND STATS
Three Zips have reached base safely in the first seven games. Jack Poist, Evan Bottone and Blake Bowen all have reached safely to begin the season.
Bowen, Charlie Schebler and Max Bowman lead the Blue and Gold in Multi-RBI games with three each. Bottone is the leader in multi-hit games with four while Bowen is second with three.
Bowman holds the longest hitting streak with hits in each of his last three games. Jack Poist holds the longest streak so far this season with a six-game hitting streak under his belt.
