Akron Falls to Dayton
April 01 | Baseball
DAYTON, Ohio -Though they had plenty of opportunities, Akron struggled to cash them in, leaving 11 Zips on base in a 6-4 defeat at the hands of the Dayton Flyers on Tuesday.
In the batter's box, the Zips were paced by Caden Matlon, who went 2-for-5 on the day with a double and two RBI. Blake Bowen put together a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Andrew Horvath also chipped in for Akron, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double and a walk.
Elijah Griffith (1-1) started and took the loss on the mound for Akron (7-21). John Allen was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going one shutout inning while allowing one hit, walking none and striking out one.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 2-0, the Zips first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. Akron got on the board thanks to Bowen's RBI double with one out.
The Zips deficit grew to 4-1 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the sixth inning. Bowen came across to score the lone run of the inning for Akron, which tightened the Flyers lead to 4-2.
Dayton expanded their lead to 6-2 before the Akron offense got going, reducing that lead to 6-4 in the ninth. The Zips drove two runs across on a two-run double from Matlon that scored Kyle McConachie and Max Bowman. The ballgame ended with that ninth inning rally falling short.
