Horvath Collects 5 Hits in Akron's 14-8 Victory Against Mercyhurst

AKRON, Ohio -Â Andrew Horvath collected five hits to help power the Akron Zips past the Mercyhurst Lakers 14-8 on Thursday.
Brett Dietrich (2-1) got the win out of the bullpen for Akron (18-34). The southpaw went 0.1 shutout innings, giving up three hits. Sean Perkins also pitched well, going two shutout innings while allowing two hits.
In addition to his five hits, Horvath had a home run and three RBI to lead the Zips. Austin Lafferty furnished a standout day at the plate as well, going 3-for-6 with a double, a home run and two RBI. Derek Occhipinti also contributed for Akron, putting together one hit in one trip to the plate while adding a double, four walks and two RBI.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips were trailing 2-0 in the second inning when they first put runs on the board. Akron managed to push across two runs in the inning.
The Lakers then scored three runs to retake their advantage heading into the fourth inning, when the Zips responded by getting back on the scoreboard themselves. The Akron offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Jack Poist, which brought the Zips lead to 6-5.
Akron held Mercyhurst without a run before expanding their lead to 7-5 the following inning. The Zips picked up a run on Lafferty's leadoff home run.
The Lakers then tied up the game at seven before Akron came back to reclaim their advantage in the sixth inning. The Zips pushed two runs across on a two-run double off the bat of Occhipinti that brought home Horvath and Lafferty, bringing the Akron advantage to 8-7.
Mercyhurst fired back to tie the game at eight before the Zips reclaimed a 13-8 advantage in the seventh inning. The Akron offense piled up five runs, highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of Horvath.
