Akron Men's Basketball Earns Numerous All-MAC Selections

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference announced the 2026 All-MAC Teams and Specialty Awards, with the Akron men's basketball team receiving All-MAC First and Third Team honors, along with and All-Defensive Team, All-Freshman Team and an All-MAC Honorable Mention.
Tavari Johnson and Amani Lyles represented Akron on the All-MAC First Team squad.
Johnson earned his second consecutive All-MAC First Team selection, while also being named to the All-MAC Preseason First Team.
The senior guard has scored in double-figures 29 times, while scoring 15 or more points in 25 games. Johnson has recorded five or more assists in 18 games, setting a new career-high of 11 assists against Milwaukee, and has led Akron in assists in 20 games while appearing and starting all 31 regular-season contests.
Johnson is averaging 20.2 points per game, with a career-high 35 coming against Yale in the Paradise Jam. He is also averaging 5.2 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game.
Tavari was named to the Early Season Lou Henson All-America Watch list on Dec. 18, 2025.
Lyles, who was also named to the All-MAC Defensive Team, averages 14.8 points per game while adding 7.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.0 steals per game. He has also recorded 20 blocks this season while appearing in all 31 games.
Amani has scored in double figures 25 times and scored 15 or more points 16 times this season. Lyles set a new career-high in scoring (26) at Ball State. He's led the team in rebounding 17 times, setting a new career-high (15) at Buffalo, and recorded 5+ assists three times. He has also led Akron in scoring six times and has recorded seven double-doubles.
Shammah Scott was named to the All-MAC Third Team. Scott was named the Sixth Man of the Year in 2024-25 and averages 12.6 points per game, 2.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 0.3 steals per game while playing in all 31 games in the regular season. He has scored in double-figures 17 times this season while recording 5+ assists in eight games. He set a career-high in scoring against Yale in the Paradise Jam with 25 points falling on a 9-of-12 night. Scott has led the Zips in scoring three times this season while leading in assists four times.Â
Evan Mahaffey earned an All-MAC Honorable Mention while also earning a spot on the All-MAC Defensive Team. Playing in his first season with the Zips after transferring from Ohio State, Evan leads the team with 1.8 steals per game and shares the lead in blocks (20) with Amani Lyles. He is averaging 10.1 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. He has notched double-figure scoring in 20 games this season, with a career-high 20 points coming against Buffalo. He's recorded 5+ assists in nine games, has led the team in rebounds in six games and has led the team in assists four times while appearing and starting all 31 regular-season games for the Zips.
Eric Mahaffey was named to the All-MAC Freshman Team, giving the Zips back-to-back seasons with an All-MAC Freshman Team selection. Eric is averaging 8.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists per game and is third on the team with 18 blocks. Eric has scored in double-figures nine times with a season-high 20 points against Iona while leading Akron in rebounds 10 times with two double-doubles and a career-high 13 boards coming at Miami (OH) (Jan.3). He has recorded 5+ assists in three games this season.
