Akron Swept Doubleheader at Kent State, Series Sweep 3-0, Nicholson Collects 100th Win at Akron

Kent, Ohio -- The Akron Zips swept a doubleheader against rival Kent State at Devine Diamond on Wednesday to claim a 3-0 series sweep at Devine Diamond. With the Sweep Akron head coach Craig Nicholson recorded is 99, 100 and 101 wins at Akron.

GAME 1 | Akron 4, Kent State 2
The Akron Zips took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 4-2 victory over the Kent State Golden Flashes on Wednesday.
The Akron offense unleashed 10 hits as Kenzie Gatti, Sophia Wygast and Andrea Day had two hits each. Gatti and Wygast went 2-for-4 in the batter's box, while Day was 2-for-3. Gatti, Lily Sullivan and Katie Cantrell all blasted doubles, while Sullivan, Cantrell, Day and Delaney Jenkinson recorded an RBI each.
Cantrell was also stellar in the field. The junior catcher did not allow a stolen base and was 4-for-4 in throwing out whomever attempted to steal, including the MAC leader in stolen bases twice.Â
Macy Walters (11-9) started in the circle and picked up the win for Akron (19-19, 11-3). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on six hits, allowing four walks and striking out four.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning.
The Zips then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the fourth inning after the Golden Flashes cut it to 3-1. Andrea Day came across to score the lone run of the inning for Akron, which brought the score to 4-1 in favor of the Zips. Kent State put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Akron still held on for the 4-2 win.

» Akron's highest scoring inning was the first, when it pushed three runs across.

GAME 2 | Akron 20, Kent State 6
Lily Sullivan racked up four hits to help propel the Akron Zips over the Kent State Golden Flashes 20-6 on Wednesday.
In addition to her four hits, Sullivan had a double, a walk and three RBIs to lead the Zips. Sophia Wygast compiled a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-5 with a home run, a walk and four RBIs. Haley Glass also helped out for Akron, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and two RBIs.
Madie Jamrog (7-5) started in the circle and picked up the win for Akron (20-19, 12-3). The right-hander went 5.2 innings, giving up six runs, all of them earned, on 11 hits, allowing one walk and striking out three.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips scored in six different innings on the way to victory. Akron broke a 4-4 tie and took the lead for good at 5-4 in the third inning on an RBI single off the bat of Delaney Jenkinson.
