Akron Splits Day 1 of Whataburger Invitational with 2-1 win against South Dakota State

STEPEHENVILLE, TX --The Akron Zips took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 2-1 victory over the South Dakota State Jackrabbits on Friday.
Sophomore Macy Walters (2-0) got the win for Akron (5-2). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on two hits, allowing four walks and striking out two.
In the batter's box, the Zips were paced by sophomore Sophia Wygast, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a walk. Junior Meagen Lee put together a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 1-for-1 with two walks. Senior Alexis Campbell also contributed for Akron, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Junior Brooke Sivek came across to score the lone run of the inning for Akron and get them on the board.
The Zips then held the Jackrabbits scoreless before expanding their lead in the third inning. Akron scored a run when sophomore Delaney Jenkinson drew a walk from junior Madi Mangulis that scored sophomore Hailee Sanchez, which brought the Zips lead to 2-0. South Dakota State put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Akron still held on for the 2-1 win.

The Akron Zips took a 1-0 lead into the seventh inning, but could not hold on and fell 2-1 to the Houston Christian Huskies Friday.

Freshman Maddelynn Lee (2-1) started and took the loss in the circle for Akron (4-2). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on 10 hits, allowing three walks and striking out one.
