Akron Claims 9-8 win against Tarleton State

STEPHENVILLE, TX -- Freshman Sydney Selker and sophomore Katie Cantrell each racked up two extra base hits to help lead the Akron Zips over the Tarleton State Texans 9-8 on Sunday.
Selker's two extra base hits were the highlight of a 2-for-4 day, and included a double, a home run and three RBI. Cantrell made her contribution with two doubles and an RBI, part of a 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Junior Meagen Lee also contributed for the Zips, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a triple, two walks and three RBI. Senior Alexis Campbell and sophomore Lily Sullivan registered two hits apiece.Â
Sophomore Madie Jamrog (2-1) got the win out of the bullpen for Akron (7-3). The right-hander went three innings, giving up one run on four hits, allowing one walk and striking out four.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with three runs in the top of the first inning. Akron's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a three-run home run off the bat of freshman Sydney .
The Zips lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the fifth trailing 7-4. The Akron offense exploded for five runs, highlighted by a three-run triple off the bat of Lee, which brought the Zips lead to 9-7. Tarleton State put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Akron still held on for the 9-8 win.

» The Zips had both Cantrell and Selker smack multiple extra-base hits in the ballgame.
» Akron's highest scoring inning was the fifth, when it pushed five runs across.
» Four Zips had multiple hits in the ballgame.
» Akron went 4-for-12 (.333) with runners in scoring position.
» Akron pitchers faced 39 Tarleton State hitters in the game, allowing three ground balls and nine fly balls while striking out eight.
» The Zips drew seven walks from Tarleton State pitching.
» Selker led the Zips at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBI.

Akron continues its Texas trip with a pair of midweek games against Incarnate Word on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. in San Antonio and again on Wednesday, Feb. 19 against Texas in Austin at 7 p.m. on the SEC Network+.
