Eying Individual and Team Titles Akron Track and Field Travels to MAC Indoor Championships

MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS: MEET INFORMATION | SCHEDULE OF EVENTS | LIVE RESULTS
AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's track and field team will join the rest of their MAC members this Friday and Saturday (Feb. 28-March1) to compete at the league's Indoor Championships, as Eastern Michigan hosts the two-day event at the Bowen Field House.
UP NEXT: The Zips will compete at the league's Indoor Championships, as Eastern Michigan hosts the two-day event at the Bowen Field House on Friday and Saturday.
In all, the championship meet will feature men's teams from Akron, Buffalo, Eastern Michigan and Kent State, while all 12 league members will be chasing the title on the women's side.

The Zips' men squad has won five of the last 10 indoor team titles and 10 of the last 18 MAC championships overall.
On the women's side, the Zips are seeking their eighth indoor championship.
MAC MEET SCHEDULE: The MAC Championships will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 28 at the Bowen Field House with the start of the women's pentathlon. That will be followed by the commencement of running events with the women's mile preliminary round at 1:45 p.m. and run through the men's distance medley relay at 6 p.m. The final day of the championship kicks off with the conclusion of the men's heptathlon at 10 a.m. The first running event is slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. with the women's mile, before the meet wraps up with the men's 4x400 relay at 4:45 p.m. For a complete schedule of events, log on to MAC-Sports.com. Scoring in the meet will be on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for individual events and relays for the women and 10-8-6-4-2-1 for the men.
ZIPS RETURN SIX ALL-MAC PERFORMERS: The Zips return five all-conference indoor performers from a season ago that will look to defend their all-league accolades.

A WEEK AGO: In its final tune-up for next weekend's Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, Akron garnered six victories and 17 overall top five efforts to highlight the performances of the Zips at the Ashland Last Chance Meet on Saturday (Feb. 22).
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Senior Cassidy Allen (Lakewood, N.Y.) eclipsed a career-best mark of 13-3.50 (4.05m).
• Redshirt junior Owen Wendl (Medina, Ohio) bested the field in the men's shot put with a career-best mark of 58-1.25 (17.71m).
• Senior Ruth Webb (Akron, Ohio) cleared 5-7.25 (1.71m) to win the women's high jump.
• Sophomore Rennie Gittens, Jr. (Miami, Fla.) won the men's 60 meters in 6.91.
• Freshman Shania Thomas (Bridgetown, Barbados) took the title in the women's triple jump with a 36-11.75 (11.27m).
• Sophomore Ayanna Stafford (Columbus, Ohio) won the women's 60 meters in a time of 7.76.
A YEAR AGO: Akron garnered six league titles as part of 24 overall top five finishes at the Mid-American Conference Track and Field Championships hosted by Eastern Michigan.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Brian Masai was named the men's Most Valuable Performer of the Meet after he captured league titles in the men's mile and 3,000 meters.
• Charles Sanders took home his ninth career league title besting the field in the men's 400 meters in a time of 48.02. Redshirt senior Jimmy Harkelroad (Huron, Ohio) garnered second-team All-MAC accolades placing second in the race in a time of 48.96.
• Sophomore AJ Jordan (Columbus, Ohio) was tabbed as the league's men's Freshman Track Athlete of the Year.
• The men's 4x400 relay squad of Sanders, sophomore Andrew Styles (Freeport, The Bahamas), Jordan and Harkelroad won the title in a time of 3:14.86.
• Cassidy Allen earned her first career league title eclipsing 12-10 (3.90m) to triumph in the women's pole vault.
• Redshirt senior Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio) earned his sixth career MAC title eclipsing 18-2 (5.53m) to win the men's pole vault.
• Junior Vanessa Horn (Ludwigsfelde, Germany) collected All-MAC honors for the first time placing second in the women's 400 meters in a time of 55.52.
• Dimitrije Novakovic earned All-MAC accolades for the fifth time garnering a second-place finish in the men's long jump with a mark of 23-11.75 (7.31m).
• Jabari Neal-Jackson collected second-team All-MAC honors for the first time placing second in the men's weight throw with a mark of 63-9 (19.42m).
AKRON TRIO EARNS MAC TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONORS: Cassidy Allen, Rennie Gittens, Jr. and Owen Wendl garnered Mid-American Conference Track and Field Athlete of the Week accolades, the league announced on Tuesday (Feb. 25).
Allen eclipsed a career-best mark of 13-3.50 (4.05m) en route to winning the women's pole vault at the Ashland Last Chance Meet, while Gittens, Jr. won the men's 60 meters in 6.91.
Wendl bested the field in the men's shot put with a career-best mark of 58-1.25 (17.71m) for the No. 2 mark in the MAC this season.
AKRON CROSS COUNTRY EARNS USTFCCCA ALL-ACADEMIC ACCOLADES: The Akron cross country team under the leadership of Zips' director of track and field/cross country Kendra Reimer-Gonzales and cross country head coach Evans Kiptoo garnered recognition for the squad's efforts in the classroom as the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) tabbed Akron a Division I All-Academic team for the 2024 campaign.
The Akron men's squad was honored for recording a 3.335 GPA, while the women's team garnered recognition for its work in the classroom for the 11th straight year with a 3.356 cumulative GPA.
Overall, 209 women's teams and 183 men's teams earned All-Academic team honors.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron track and field teams have garnered recognition for their efforts during the 2025 indoor season as the Zips are rated among the Top 30 in the Event Squad rankings for four events released on Feb. 25, 2025, as part of the United States Track and Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index.
Akron is rated 15th nationally in the women's weight throw, 16th in the men's shot put, 26th in the men's triple jump and 30th in the men's weight throw.
ZIPS RANK AMONG NATION'S BEST IN 2025 TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron have one individual student-athlete ranked in the Top 50 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) for the 2025 indoor campaign as Hunter Garretson is second in the nation in the men's pole vault (18-10.75/5.76m).
GARRETSON NAMED ELITE 90 WINNER: Hunter Garretson was the recipient of the Elite 90 award for the 2024 NCAA Division Men's Track and Field Indoor Championship.
Garretson, who is majoring in mathematics, boasts a perfect 4.0 GPA, was presented with the award during a presentation on March 8.
Winning the honor for the second consecutive season, Garretson became only the third multiple-time recipient of the award in Division I men's track and field joining Cincinnati's Adrian Valles (2017-Indoor | 2018-Indoor) and Nebraska's John Welk (2013-Outdoor | 2014-Outdoor).
The honor was the third time a Zip has garnered the distinguished honor joining Tyler Sanda, who won the award as a member of the Akron men's soccer team in 2015.
