Zips Sweep Day 2 of Spartan Classic: Offense Plates 11 Runs, Lee Hurls Shutout

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Akron softball moved to 3-1 overall after sweeping the second day of the Spartan Classic at Cyrill Stadium hosted by USC Upstate. The Zips started the day with a convincing 11-2 win over Monmouth and followed with a dominant pitching performance by freshman Maddelynn Lee for a 2-0 shutout win over the host.

Game 3 – vs Monmouth
Akron received contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, helping the Zips put 11 runs on the board and take down the Monmouth Hawks 11-2 Saturday.

At the plate, the Zips were led by freshman Sydney Selker, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a double and three RBI. Sophomore Lily Sullivan put together a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 3-for-3 with two RBI. Sophomore Delaney Jenkinson also contributed for Akron, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding two RBI.

Sophomore Macy Walters (1-0) started in the circle and picked up the win for Akron (2-1). The right-hander went five innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on five hits, allowing one walk and striking out four.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Akron's offense started clicking and put up six runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Jenkinson.

The Hawks then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 6-2 until the Zips expanded their advantage in the fourth. The Akron offense exploded for five runs, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of freshman Sydney , which brought the Zips lead to 11-2. The score remained 11-2 for the rest of the game, as Akron coasted to the win.
