Akron's Ninth-Inning Comeback Falls Short in 8-5 Loss to Miami (OH)
May 10 | Baseball
OXFORD, Ohio -Â The Akron Zips put together a ferocious comeback, scoring three runs in the ninth inning, but the late-game rally came up short and they fell 8-5 to the Miami (OH) RedHawks Saturday.
Offensively, the Zips were led by Max Bowman, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a home run and two RBI. Derek Occhipinti put together a standout day at the dish as well, going 1-for-1 with a home run and two RBI. Jackson Frasure also chipped in for Akron, putting together one hit in one trip to the plate while adding a double and an RBI.
Jared Schaeffer (1-7) got the ball to start for Akron (16-33, 9-20) and took the loss. The right-hander went six innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on eight hits, allowing no walks and striking out nine. Jacob Beall was a bright spot for the Zips, coming out of the bullpen and throwing one scoreless inning, allowing no hits, with one walk and two strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips were trailing 1-0 in the sixth inning when they first put runs on the board. Akron plated two runs when Bowman left the yard with Jack Poist aboard.
The RedHawks then rallied to score seven runs and take an 8-2 lead before the Zips got back on the board in the ninth. Akron scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run homer from Occhipinti, which tightened the RedHawks lead to 8-5. The ballgame ended with that ninth inning rally falling short.
