Jamrog dominant for Akron in shutout victory over UIC, Zips Fall to Dayton

Richmond, Ky. - The Akron softball team split the opening day of the EKU Tournament as  sophomore Madie Jamrog threw a shutout in game one against Illinois Chicago to lead Akron to a 9-0 victory, but fell 7-4 to Dayton in the second game after a Flyers comeback on Friday.Â
GAME 1Â -Â sophomore Madie Jamrog was dealing on Friday, throwing a two-hit shutout to lead the Akron Zips over the UIC Flames 9-0.
Jamrog (4-1) went the distance for Akron (9-6), giving up two hits, walking none and striking out five.
At the plate, the Zips were paced by sophomore Lily Sullivan, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a double and two RBI. Sophomore Sophia Wygast furnished a standout day at the dish as well, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Junior Brooke Sivek also contributed for Akron, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips took the lead for good in the fifth, scoring for the first time in the inning. Akron plated two runs off of UIC pitching, one of which was driven in on a run-scoring double off the bat of freshman Andrea .
The Zips then tacked on runs in the sixth and seventh innings, with their biggest output coming in the seventh when they scored four times. The big hit in that inning was a one-run single off the bat of junior Abigail Scheller.

GAME 2. --Â The Akron Zips took a 4-2 lead into the sixth inning, but could not hang on and fell 7-4 to the Dayton Flyers Friday.
Sophomore Macy Walters (3-3) got the ball to start for Akron (9-7) and took the loss. Freshman Ma. Lee was a bright spot for the Zips, coming out of the bullpen and throwing 1.2 shutout innings, allowing no hits, with one walk and two strikeouts.
In the batter's box, the Zips were led by freshman Sydney , who went 2-for-3 on the day with a home run and an RBI. Sophomore Lily Sullivan put together a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Junior Brooke Sivek also chipped in for Akron, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a double and a walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Akron got an RBI single from sophomore Sophia Wygast, scoring Sivek from second base.
The Zips then held the Flyers scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Freshman Sydney came across to score the lone run of the inning for Akron, which brought the Zips lead to 2-0.
Dayton narrowed Akron's lead to 2-1 before the Zips stretched the advantage to 3-1 in the fourth inning. The Zips added a run on freshman Sydney 's one-out solo home run off junior Izzy Kemp.
The Flyers gained ground, closing the gap to 3-2 until Akron added some insurance in the fifth. The Zips scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Sullivan, bringing the Akron advantage to 4-2. The Zips were unable to hold the lead, as Dayton scored five times over the remaining two innings to grab the 7-4 win.
