Wygast Collects 3 Extra Base Hits, Zips Split Series vs Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Akron Zips split a doubleheader at Buffalo, winning the first game 5-3 and falling in game two 2-0.
GAME 1 | Akron 5, Buffalo 3
Sophomore Sophia Wygast collected three extra base hits to help lead the Akron Zips over the Buffalo Bulls 5-3 on Wednesday. Wygast's three extra base hits were the highlight of a 3-for-3 day, and included two doubles, a home run and three RBI. Senior Alexis Campbell furnished a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Junior Meagan Lee also helped out for the Zips, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double. Junior Brooke Sivek and sophomore Lily Sullivan also contributed a pair of hits, while freshman Andrea Day went 1-for-2 with a double and a walk. Sullivan doubled and recorded an RBI.
Sophomore Macy Walters (14-9) got the win for Akron (26-22, 13-8). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on six hits, allowing two walks and striking out four.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Akron got on the board thanks to Wygast's RBI double with one out.
The Bulls then tied the ballgame at one before the Zips came back to reclaim their advantage in the third inning. Junior Brooke Sivek came across to score the lone run of the inning for Akron, which brought the score to 2-1 in favor of the Zips.
Akron kept Buffalo scoreless before building their lead to 3-1 in the fifth inning. The Zips added a run on Wygast's two-out solo home run off freshman Genevieve Longsdorf.
The Bulls gained ground, closing the gap to 3-2 until Akron added some insurance in the sixth. The Zips picked up a run on Campbell's leadoff dinger off sophomore Olivia Russ, bringing the score to 4-2 in favor of Akron.
Buffalo got within 4-3 until the Zips scored again in the seventh inning to stretch its lead to 5-3. Akron scored once on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Lily Sullivan. The score remained 5-3 for the rest of the game, as the Zips held on for the win.

, --The Akron Zips were not able to notch a run against Buffalo pitcher sophomore Olivia Russ on Wednesday despite collecting five hits and were shut out 2-0 by the Bulls.
Sophomore Madie Jamrog (8-6) got the ball to start for Akron (26-23, 13-9) and took the loss. The right-hander went six innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on five hits, allowing one walk and striking out five.
At the plate, the Zips were paced by junior Meagan Lee, who went 3-for-3 on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Akron did not advance a runner past second base in the game. The Zips went 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position, last placing a runner as far as second in the first, when junior Brooke Sivek made it into scoring position with nobody out.

Saturday is scheduled for a doubleheader at 1 and 3 p.m., while the regular season finale and Senior Day is set for Noon Sunday. Senior Day ceremony will be post game.
