Zips Split Doubleheader With Ohio; Win Game One 9-4

AKRON, Ohio - The Akron baseball team split a doubleheader with the Ohio Bobcats on Sunday, May 4.
GAME 1 | Akron 9, Ohio 4
AKRON, Ohio - The Zips recorded 17 hits in game one of a doubleheader as the Blue and Gold recorded a 9-4 victory.
Jared Schaeffer (1-6) started on the mound and picked up the win for Akron (16-30, 9-17). The right-hander went eight innings, giving up one run on four hits, allowing two walks and striking out two.
Offensively, the Zips were led by Austin Lafferty, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a double and three RBI. Lafferty was one of seven Zips to record a multi-hit game. Max Bowman went 3-for-5 on the day. Jack Poist went 2-for-4 and had three stolen bases. Evan Bottone had a pair of hits, one being a double, and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips got on the scoreboard first, starting in the sixth inning. Akron scored twice, with one run coming across on Bottone's single.
The Zips then held the Bobcats scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. which brought the score to 5-0 in favor of the Zips.
Ohio narrowed Akron's lead to 5-1 before the Zips stretched the advantage to 9-1 in the eighth inning. The Zips bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a two-run double off the bat of Lafferty. Ohio put three runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Akron still coasted to the 9-4 win.

AKRON, Ohio -Â Four Akron players collected at least two hits, but the Zips fell to the Ohio Bobcats 10-5 Sunday.
Bottone, Poist, Lafferty and Ian Pennington all recorded multiple hits.
Pennington had a home run, a double and three RBI against the Bobcats. Poist recorded a home run and one RBI while Lafferty recorded two RBI for the Zips.
Jack Kelley (3-2) started and took the loss on the mound for Akron (16-31, 9-18). Jacob Beall was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going 1.2 shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out one.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips were trailing 4-0 in the second inning when they first put runs on the board. Akron got an RBI single from Lafferty, scoring Caden Matlon from second base.
The Zips deficit expanded to 6-1 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the fourth inning. Akron scored twice on Pennington's two-run homer, which tightened the Bobcats lead to 6-3.
Akron kept the Bobcats off the scoreboard before narrowing the gap to 6-4 in the fifth.
The Bobcats expanded their lead to 7-4 before the Akron offense got back in action, biting into that lead in the sixth. The Zips recorded a run on Pennington's two-out RBI double, tightening the Ohio lead to 7-5. The Zips were unable to get any closer, as Ohio added three runs to their tally on the way to a 10-5 final.
