Wygast Records 4 RBIs as Zips Win 12-4 over Ball State

Akron, Ohio - Akron scored 12 runs on 12 hits to secure a season opening split at home and in Mid-American Conference play on Friday at Lee R. Jackson Field.Â

Sophomore Sophia Wygast collected four RBIs to help lead the Akron Zips past the Ball State Cardinals 12-4 on Friday. Wygast went 3-for-3 with a home run and a walk in addition to her four RBIs for the Zips. Junior Abigail Scheller furnished a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Senior Alexis Campbell also contributed for Akron, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a walk and two RBI.
Sophomore Madie Jamrog (6-2) got the win for Akron (13-12, 1-1). The right-hander went 4.1 innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on eight hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Zips first put runs on the board in the first inning. Akron's offense started clicking and put up five runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Campbell.
The Cardinals failed to push any runs across before the Zips offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Sophomore Lily Sullivan came across to score the lone run of the inning for Akron, which brought the Zips lead to 6-1.
Ball State narrowed Akron's lead to 6-2 before the Zips stretched the advantage to 9-2 in the third inning. The Zips recorded three runs in the frame, two of them coming across on a two-run single off the bat of Wygast.
The Cardinals fought back, closing the gap to 9-4 until Akron added some insurance in the fifth. The three-run frame for the Zips was punctuated by a two-run homer from Wygast, bringing the Akron advantage to 12-4. The score remained 12-4 for the rest of the game, as the Zips coasted to the win.

Sophomore Macy Walters had everything working on Friday, punching out nine Ball State hitters over seven innings of work, but it was not enough as the Akron Zips lost to the Cardinals 6-1.
In addition to her nine strikeouts, Walters (4-6) threw seven innings, giving up six runs, all of them earned, on six hits and walking four for Akron (12-12, 0-1).
In the batter's box, the Zips were paced by junior Meagan Lee, who went 2-for-4 on the day. Sophomore Lily Sullivan compiled a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-4. Senior Alexis Campbell also chipped in for Akron, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips were trailing 2-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board. Akron got an RBI single from Campbell, scoring junior B. Sivek from third base. The Zips were unable to get any closer, as Ball State added four runs to their tally on the way to a 6-1 final.
