AKRON, Ohio -- The Akron Zips fell 7-2 in the series finale against Ball State at Lee R. Jackson Field on Saturday.

Ball State pitcher Ella Whitney allowed only five hits as Akron freshmen Sydney Selker (2-for-3) and Andrea Day (2-for-3) collected a pair of hits followed by junior Meagan Lee (1-for-3) with a single. Selker blasted a solo homerun and added a single, while Day had a double and single.

Sophomore Macy Walters (4-7) started and took the loss in the circle for Akron (13-13, 1-2). Sophomore Mallory Herwerden was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going three innings, surrendering two runs, zero earned, on four hits, walking none and striking out one.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 5-0, the Zips first put runs on the board in the third inning. Day came across to score the lone run of the inning for Akron and get them on the board.

The Zips deficit grew to 7-1 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the seventh inning. Akron picked up a run on Selker's leadoff home run off of Whitney, which brought the score to 7-2 in favor of the Cardinals. The Zips were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

» Akron pitchers faced 37 Ball State hitters in the game, allowing nine ground balls and 10 fly balls while striking out two.

Akron will travel to Purdue Fort Wayne for a midweek non-conference game at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18, before traveling to Mount Pleasant, Mich. to play a three-game set against Central Michigan next weekend.
