Sivek Plates Bailey for Extra Innings Win at Purdue Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The Akron Zips needed nine innings to get the job done, but pulled off the 3-2 extra-innings victory over the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons as junior Brooke Sivek recorded the game-winning RBI as she pushed senior Autumn Bailey across the plate in the top of the ninth on Tuesday.
Freshman Sydney Selker led the offense with a 2-for-4 performance, including a homerun and double with two RBIs and one run scored. Sivek finished the game with a hit, walk and an RBI. Five addition players added base hits as junior Meagan Lee, Selker and Bailey scored the runs.
Sophomore Mallory Herwerden (1-0) got the win out of the bullpen for Akron (14-13). The right-hander went 3.1 shutout innings without giving up a hit. Sophomore Madie Jamrog started the ballgame and went four innings, surrendering one run on six hits, walking none and striking out one.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips were trailing 1-0 in the fifth inning when they first put runs on the board. Akron plated two runs when freshman Sydney left the yard with junior Meagan Lee aboard.
After the Mastodons rallied to tie the ballgame at two, the Zips came back to retake the lead in the ninth inning. Akron scored once on an RBI single off the bat of junior Brooke Sivek, which brought the score to 3-2 in favor of the Zips. The score remained 3-2 for the rest of the game, as Akron held on for the win.

» The Zips power output was led by freshman Sydney Selker , who compiled two extra base hits in the ballgame.
» Akron's highest scoring inning was the fifth, when it pushed two runs across.
» Akron pitchers faced 35 Purdue Fort Wayne hitters in the game, allowing 13 ground balls and 12 fly balls while striking out one.
» Freshman Sydney Selker led the Zips at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and two RBI.

The Zips will be on the road this weekend, traveling to Central Michigan for a three-game set on Friday and Saturday, March 21-22.
