Zips Split Doubleheader with Ball State on Saturday; Score 11 Runs in Victory

AKRON, Ohio - The Akron baseball team split a doubleheader against the Ball State Cardinals with the Zips taking the second game 11-5 to conclude the series on Saturday.
GAME 2 | Akron 11, Ball State 5
Max Bowman, Caden Matlon and Ian Pennington all had a three-hit game to help propel the Akron Zips over the Ball State Cardinals 11-5 on Saturday.
Matlon's two extra base hits were the highlight of a 3-for-4 day, and included two doubles and a walk. Penningto made his contribution with two doubles and an RBI, part of a 3-for-5 performance at the plate. Blake Bowen also chipped in for the Zips, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a home run and two RBI. Jack Poist added to the home run tally while collecting two hits and driving in two runs. Max Bowman went 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Jack Kelley (1-1) started on the mound and picked up the win for Akron (7-20, 1-11). The right-hander went 5.2 innings, giving up four runs, all of them earned, on three hits, allowing three walks and striking out five. Johnny Anservitz also made an impact on the mound for the Zips, throwing one scoreless inning while allowing one hit.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. Akron's offense started clicking and put up five runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Charlie Schebler.
The Zips then held the Cardinals scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Akron scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Bowman, which brought the Zips lead to 6-0.
Akron held Ball State without a run before building their lead to 8-0 the following inning. The Zips added two to their tally on Poist's two-run homer to .
Akron held the Cardinals without a run before their offense got things rolling the next inning. The Zips scored twice on Bowen's two-run homer, bringing the Akron advantage to 10-0.
Ball State got within 10-4 until the Zips scored again in the sixth inning to stretch its lead to 11-4. Matlon came across to score the lone run of the inning for Akron and get them on the board. Ball State put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Zips still coasted to the 11-5 win.

Max Bowman totaled three hits, but the Akron Zips fell to the Ball State Cardinals 5-2 Saturday.
Bowman's three-hit day led the Zips offensively. Evan Bottone furnished a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-3. Caden Matlon also chipped in for Akron, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a double.
Jared Schaeffer (0-5) got the ball to start for Akron (6-20, 0-11) and took the loss. Jacob Beall was a bright spot for the Zips, coming out of the bullpen and throwing one scoreless inning, allowing no hits, with no walks and one strikeout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 4-0, the Zips first put runs on the board in the sixth inning. Will Heisler came across to score the lone run of the inning for Akron and get them on the board.
The Cardinals expanded their lead to 5-1 before the Zips offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the ninth. Akron scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Charlie Schebler, which tightened the Cardinals lead to 5-2. The Zips were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
