Wygast Lifts Akron to Extra Inning Win Over Miami, Zips Split

OXFORD, Ohio -- The Akron Zips split a #MACtion doubleheader against the league-leading Miami RedHawks on Tuesday as sophomore Sophia Wygast sent the game-winning hit over the fence in extra innings for a 3-2 win (9 inn.). The Zips fell 8-0 in game two.
GAME 1 | Akron 3, Miami (OH) 2
Wygast was responsible for plating the first and last runs of the extra inning affair with a 2-for-3 performance. She registered two extra-base hits, recording an RBI double for Akron's first run and the homerun to give Akron the lead in the top of the ninth inning. She also reached base with a walk, while junior Brooke Sivek added a pair of hits in a 2-for-4 performance. Wygast and Sivek were responsible for four of the Zips six hits.Â
Junior Meagan Lee (1-for-4) and freshman Sydney Selker (1-for-3) provided the outstanding pair of hits. Lee issued a single and scored on a scarifice flyout by sophomore Lily Sullivan, while Selker recorded a double and a walk for two base apperances.Â
Sophomore Madie Jamrog had everything working on Tuesday, fanning eight Miami (OH) hitters over 7.1 innings of work to help propel the Akron Zips past the RedHawks 3-2. In addition to her eight strikeouts, Jamrog threw 7.1 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on five hits and walking none for Akron (20-18, 7-6).
Sophomore Macy Walters (11-8) also made an impact in the circle for the Zips, throwing 1.2 scoreless innings while allowing no hits, with two walks and three strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Zips first put runs on the board in the sixth inning. Akron pushed across two runs in the frame, the big blow coming on an RBI double from Wygast.
The RedHawks then tied the ballgame at two before the Zips came back to reclaim their advantage in the ninth inning. Akron picked up a run on Wygast's leadoff home run off of sophomore Madilyn Reeves, which brought the score to 3-2 in favor of the Zips. The score remained 3-2 for the rest of the game, as Akron held on for the win.

The Akron Zips were not able to notch a run against Miami (OH) pitcher junior Lea Chevrier, falling 8-0 to the RedHawks.
Sophomore Macy Walters (11-9) started and took the loss in the circle for Akron (20-19, 7-7).
In the batter's box, the Zips were led by junior Brooke Sivek, who went 1-for-2Â with a walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Akron managed three chances with runners on third in the shutout, going a total of 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position. The Zips last got a runner on third in the fourth, when sophomore Hailee Sanchez made it 60 feet away from scoring with two outs.
