Zips Sweep Doubleheader at Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio -- The Akron Zips swept a doubleheader at Toledo by scores of 12-I 7 and 6-2 to claim the series 2-1 against the Rockets on Saturday.
GAME 1 | Akron 12, Toledo 7
Sophomore Sophia Wygast collected four RBIs to help propel the Akron Zips over the Toledo Rockets 12-7 on Saturday.
Sophomore Macy Walters (4-7) started in the circle and picked up the win for Akron (15-17, ). The right-hander went four innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on six hits, allowing two walks and striking out two.
Wygast went 2-for-2 with a home run in addition to her four RBIs for the Zips. Senior Alexis Campbell furnished a standout performance at the plate as well, going 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Freshman Andrea also chipped in for Akron, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double and a walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips got the scoring started early, putting three runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Akron's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a three-run home run off the bat of Wygast.
The Rockets then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 4-1 until the Zips expanded their advantage in the second. Akron scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Wygast, which brought the score to 5-1 in favor of the Zips.
Toledo narrowed Akron's lead to 5-3 before the Zips stretched the advantage to 6-3 in the fifth inning. The Zips scored once on an RBI single off the bat of junior Abigail Scheller.
The Rockets fought back, closing the gap to 6-5 until Akron added some insurance in the sixth. The Zips scored once on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Katie Cantrell, bringing the score to 7-5 in favor of Akron.
The Zips kept Toledo scoreless before expanding their lead to 12-5 the following inning. The Akron offense piled up five runs, highlighted by a one-run single off the bat of Campbell. Toledo put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Zips still coasted to the 12-7 win.

The Akron Zips took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 6-2 win over the Toledo Rockets on Saturday.
Sophomore Sophia Wygast led the offense with a 2-for-4 performance, including a pair of doubles ans two RBIs. Junior Meagan Lee and sophomore Katie Cantrell added doubles as Lee scored arun and Cantrell registered and RBI wit a run scored. Freshman Sydney Selker notched the Zips final hit with two runs scored.Â
Sophomore Macy Walters (6-7) got the win for Akron (16-17, ). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up two runs, zero earned, on six hits, allowing no walks and striking out one.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips got the scoring started early, putting two runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Akron scored twice on a two-run double off the bat of sophomore Sophia Wygast.
After the Rockets rallied to tie the ballgame at two, the Zips came back to retake the lead in the second inning. Sophomore Katie Cantrell came across to score the lone run of the inning for Akron, which brought the score to 3-2 in favor of the Zips.
Akron held Toledo without a run before expanding their lead to 6-2 the following inning. The score remained 6-2 for the rest of the game, as Akron coasted to the win.
